Practise in odd time
Odd meters are counted in groups of 2 and 3. 7/8 is often felt as 2+2+3, 5/8 as 3+2, and 9/8 can be 3+3+3 or 2+2+2+3. Choose a grouping above and the first beat of each group is accented, so you hear the feel straight away. In 6/8 and 12/8 the metronome counts eighth notes; set a slower tempo to feel each one, or a faster one to feel the dotted beat.
